Eli


Eli Karam, Ph.D., LMFT is a clinician specializing in couple and family therapy and maintains a private practice in Louisville, KY. With over 22 years experience as a mental health professional, Dr. Eli a graduate of both The Family Institute at Northwestern University and Purdue University's Department of Child Development and Family Studies. Eli is the Past President for the Kentucky Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (KAMFT) and was voted in a national election to serve on the Board of Directors for the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) in 2014. He is a four-time AAMFT Award winner for his contributions to the profession of systemic therapy.  He is also a tenured Full Professor in the Couple & Family Therapy Program in the Kent School of Social Work & Family Science at the University of Louisville.  There he conducts research on couple and family relationships, teaches and supervises therapists-in-training. Dr. Eli also educates the public through various television and radio appearances . Among his areas of clinical expertise are:

Eli has been recognized both locally and nationally by the AAMFT for his contributions to the profession of marriage and family therapy. In addition, Eli has presented at national conferences and to general audiences speaking on the topics of couple therapy, research and practice integration in marriage and family therapy training programs, the therapeutic alliance, and enhancing couple intimacy and communication skills.

Eli utilizes an integrative, systemic orientation in his work with clients. He also developed a “Common Factors” approach to therapy that prioritizes the therapeutic alliance and client motivations and strengths. This approach, articulated in his latest book, Bringing Common Factors to Life in Couple & Family Therapyis used in the training of both young and more experienced couple and family therapists. Dr. Eli's therapeutic approach is to provide direction, support and practical feedback to help clients effectively address personal life challenges. Eli believes that all successful therapies should foster change and interpersonal growth through the modification of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors around selected problem areas.

In his personal life, Eli enjoys spending time with family and friends. He is married with a son, daughter and two dogs.
